Purple Pictures is a new UK-based adult-only DVD rental service, launched in March 2008 with an impressive looking site design. Everything you'd expect in a mainstream DVD rental service is here, and they even have a customer service phone line to boot.
Information on each title is good, with our only complaint that some titles lack a synopsis, though you can probably tell enough about it from the box cover. There is a good amount of other info, including stars (though not hyperlinked), director, genre, release date, running time, languages, format, subtitles, sound, aspect ratio, and even a list of special features.
There are plenty of additional quirks, for instance, you can put your account on pause for 1-3 weeks, say if you go on holiday. You can also freeze your account for between 22 and 60 days, so long as you have returned all discs to Purple Pictures first. Also, you can even buy gift subscriptions.
Purple Pictures do use a Fair Use Policy, so will throttle back your discs if you are viewing many in a particular month, just like mainstream market leader Lovefilm. This shouldn't affect most customers though, only high volume renters.
Naturally you can browse by genre (13 listed), as well as their picks of top films. Purple Pictures has an excellent privacy policy and mail in nondescript envelopes, addressing a frequent customer concern.
Prices: Purple Pictures has a 14-day free trial, just like mainstream companies, and for a limited time to celebrate its launch, also offers a free adult dvd to subscribers. £4.99. They are currently offering all their tariffs around 25% off normal rates for a limited time, resulting in some great deals. They offer a capped two discs total per month subscription for £4.99 (regular £4.99), 4 discs total per month for £8.99 (regular £9.99). They also offer an unlimited two discs out at once per month subscription for £12.99 (regular £14.99), 3 discs out unlimited per month for £14.99 (regular £19.99).
To cancel, you can log on and click through the process online. Any outstanding discs you have must be returned within 7 days, otherwise you will be liable to be charged up to 30 pounds each for them. You must obtain a Certificate of Posting for the final discs you send back, which is free at any post office.
