MSN DVD rental ended in late 2006; this review is kept as it was for posterity.
MSN DVD rental is are powered by Video Island, who have since merged with the industry leader Lovefilm. However, unlike most "powered by" DVD rental sites, MSN's site design is much poorer than Lovefilm, with far fewer of the collection and search links that make Lovefilm the best DVD rental company, in our opinion. The banner ad and other Microsoft links are an added distraction. They also dropped any phone contact number. If you can get past the design, and particularly if you use MSN for other service and so this is a convenient place to rent DVDs, then this site may be for you; we'd just as soon skip the middlemen and stay with Lovefilm ourselves.
Prices: MSN now offer 4 discs in their free trial, within 28 days. You won't be able eligible for another free trial if you've already had one with any Lovefilm powered-by" sites. They recently changed their tariff to the limited Amazon-style model; 4 discs per month, 1 DVD at any one time for £7.99 per mont, 5 discs per month, 2 DVDs at any one time for £9.99 per month, or for 10 DVD's per month, 3 at any one time for £14.99 (at this level you're far better off with an unlimited service, where you can easily get 16+ discs a month for the same price).
Frequently Asked Questions about MSN DVD Rental Trials:
When do I have to inform the MSN DVD Rental that I’m canceling my free trial to avoid being charged? As with all DVD rental companies this does vary, so be sure to read the Terms and Conditions. Some DVD rental companies require one to five day’s notice before the end of the free trial, and then allow you to send the outstanding DVD s back within a given trial period. Others are stricter and require they have the DVD s in their possession by the end of the free trial.
What if I’ve tried to cancel my MSN DVD Rental free trial, but they charged me anyway? As with all DVD rental companies you can either enjoy a month of paid DVD rental s (after all they’re not that expensive) or if you don’t mind a big hassle, you could complain. This works to varying degrees with various companies; the larger DVD rental companies will often refund your money if you can get the right Customer Service person. We recommend you always call if the DVD rental company has a customer service phone number; don’t email if you can avoid it, as these are answered slowly, if at all.
Can I have multiple free trials with the MSN DVD Rental? No. In fact some other companies limit one free trial per address, though others allow multiple ones for different people living there. Also note, the UK’s biggest rental company, Lovefilm, will not allow further free trials with any of their dozen-plus “powered by” affiliate rental sites either (including Lovefilm affiliate MSN DVD Rental), which is why we don’t list them on our table.
Online DVD rental prices and terms change frequently; check the company website for the latest.
