Films2u appeared in late 2007, and to our knowledge is the first UK-based courier DVD rental service. This method is used extensively in India, but all other UK services use Royal Mail vice a delivery van. Of course this means they can only serve a smaller area, Northamptonshire, specifically postcodes NN1, NN4, NN5, and parts of NN7.
We like the courier idea, but unfortunately the prices charged are simply too much--certainly comparable to a high street rental shop, but then you can get much cheaper through online deliveries. We counted through the 15 genres and found only about 2,000 films, about what you'll find in many smaller video stores, but not a very big selection compared to online companies. In fact, to us this looks like a local independent video store which has started doing deliveries--we don't have a problem with that, it's just there's better value out there.
Each title had a fair bit of data, including picture, rating, release date, synopsis, stars, and director, but none of the extra information or customer comments/reviews you'd expect on a larger site. As a plus, they do run a loyalty scheme. If the films sent to you are returned to within a week of posting, your account will be credited with 1 point. For every 10 points you accrue, you will receive 1 free film from your request list.
Prices: Films2u DVD Rental do rentals by the week, delivering the films to your door. The cost for one film for a week is £3.50, two films out for £6.00, and three films for £7.00, with every additional film an extra 2 quid. They have a two-week free trial, up to four discs.
These prices are simply too high compared with unlimited, or even limited rental services which work through Royal Mail in our opinion, and we really can't recommend them.
